From a young age, Sofia began attending therapy sessions at various centers in an effort to work on her developmental milestones. However, progress was limited until a caregiver attending therapy at The Action Foundation (TAF) recommended the center to Carol and Sofia. In March 2021, they joined the therapy program at TAF, determined to give Sofia the best possible chance at progress and development.
The impact of therapy at TAF was profound. Sofia made significant strides in her development, achieving milestones such as head control, trunk stability, sitting, standing, and even taking her first steps with minimal support. Through consistent therapy intervention and home-based facilitation, Sofia improved her fine motor skills and even started communicating with her mother. Oral motor muscle stimulation using an electric toothbrush played a role in her progress, as did the anticonvulsant medication that helped reduce her seizures.
Carol, as a single mother, faced financial difficulties in seeking therapy services, purchasing medication, and arranging for daycare. The challenges were further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected her business. However, Carol’s love for her daughter and her strong resolve propelled her forward. She sought support, adapted to the changing circumstances, and ensured that Sofia continued to receive the care she needed.
