In a world that continually strives for inclusion and equality, it is disheartening to acknowledge that girls with disabilities still encounter barriers in accessing education. These adolescent girls face challenges such as lack of school fees, negative perceptions of their ability and limited access to menstrual health and hygiene products that can hinder their educational journey and personal growth. However, amidst these hurdles, a beacon of hope shines through our Ibuka Scholars Initiative.
Over the last three years, the initiative has been transforming the lives of 38 girls with disabilities through awarding scholarships and essential in-school support mentorship and career guidance. Recently, we held a beautiful event at Pistachio by Masala Twist, that marked the beginning of the school holidays.
The Scholars Meeting was not merely a casual get-together; it was an occasion filled with profound purpose. During this session, the young scholars had the opportunity to share their experiences and achievements in school. This open dialogue not only allowed them to recount their achievements but also provided a platform to co-create unique solutions to challenges they encountered on their learning journeys.
“The last time I went to such a nice place was when I attended the Principal’s lunch, it was very good, now I will go back to school motivated to work harder.”
Mildred, Form 3, Ibuka Scholar.
We also had mentors play a pivotal role in shaping the future of these aspiring scholars. Their invaluable insights and encouragement not only nurture academic growth but also equip the girls with essential life skills and the mindset needed to overcome any obstacle that comes their way.
The Ibuka Program is more than just an educational initiative; it’s an initiative that empowers young girls with disabilities to dream bigger and strive harder in their pursuit of excellence. By addressing the specific barriers they face, this program is breaking down walls and opening doors that were once thought to be closed.
“They told me good things about the place and Tracy really appreciated you guys for everything, infact she has never been to such places she was so happy and she can’t wait for another treat ,she said thank you because she can now go to school everyday without missing class because of school fees… as a parent,I say thank you ”

A special note of gratitude to AMPLIFY GIRLS, whose support has been instrumental in propelling the Ibuka Scholars Initiative forward. It’s through partnerships like these that real change is ignited, allowing the dreams of these remarkable girls to become reality.
The Ibuka Program stands as an example of what can be achieved when passion, dedication, and collaboration come together. With every scholar’s success story, the program reaffirms its commitment to breaking barriers, nurturing potential, and ultimately, creating a world where every girl, regardless of ability, can achieve their dreams.
